Welcome to the Op Roakeldais site, the Folkdance Festival of Warffum, in a small corner of the Netherlands, five kilometres from the Waddenzee, once a year the epic centre of a big cultural shock. Folk dancing groups from every corner of the world present themselves. From Chinese female perfection in colour and choreographies and from black pounding boots of Georgian macho’s and from swinging, whirling skirts to a mean Balkan bridal dance.

Professionals
The festival is proud of the fact that they are able to invite folkdance groups, of a professional level, from around the world.
This is possible thanks to the director of the festival Rikus Draijer, a name known internationally in the dance world. He is president of the International Festival Commission of IOV. IOV is a world wide organisation in official relation with UNESCO and deals with all aspects of folkart and folkculture. Because of its enormous network it is possible to get the top of the folk-dance world over here every year.

Organisation is like a well running machine
The dance companies love performing in Warffum, because the festival is known for it’s perfect stage management and organisation skills, the many volunteers and the hospitality of all the host families that welcome the visitors into their homes.
Unique for a festival is the permanent festival location. During the Folklore Festival lots of other activities have also been planned, like a theatre market, a creative market and an old-timer meeting with a rally and a car show with old-timers and classic cars. One of the highlights of the festival is the Parade of the Continents, a beautiful parade in the dwelling mound of Warffum.
