Black Harmony

On Saturday evening, Op Roakeldais proudly welcomes the renowned music ensemble Black Harmony, a group representing the rich traditions of Afro-Surinamese music from Amsterdam. Black Harmony was founded on June 9, 2006, and consists of ambitious and driven young men who have specialized in close harmony and Afro-Surinamese percussion and vocals. Their repertoire is firmly rooted in traditional Surinamese music styles such as Apinti and Kawina, sung in Sranan, through which they manage to touch and connect with a broad audience. What makes Black Harmony unique is their mission to bring Afro-Surinamese music genres, which are often less visible, to a rightful place within the performing arts. They believe that this traditional music—with its deep historical and cultural roots—deserves just as much recognition as other music genres in Dutch society. Through their performances, educational workshops, and collaborative projects, they strive not only to preserve this music but also to let it grow and be shared with young and old alike. In addition, Black Harmony consciously works on positive representation: through performances and community programs, they contribute to a broader appreciation of Afro-Surinamese culture and a positive image of Black men in society. During Op Roakeldais, Black Harmony presents a powerful and profound musical experience centered on tradition, rhythm, and identity — an ode to Surinamese roots, delivered with passion and connection.
