Ama Zebra

´It´s in you hands to make of our world a better one for all´

A beautiful quote from Nelson Mandela from the country where Ama Zebra comes from. Ama Zebra originates from the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, better known as the city of Durban.

Durban was first mentioned in history on Christmas Day 1497, when Vasco Da Gama set foot there on his way to India. He named the city Natal. In the 19th century, the British settlers gave the city a new name, Durban. The Dutch Voortrekkers are also not unknown. Finally, the Indians also came to take a look. This city was also split into a white and black part in the 20th century by racial segregation until the end of Apartheid.

This group, who made it far in South Africa’s Got Talent 2017, brings traditional Zulu dancing with a modern twist and breathtaking singing to the festival! Traditionally, these dances were performed at rites of passage, honors and festivities. They are characterized by rhythmic leg and footwork as well as smooth hip movements.

During their participation in 2019, Festival Op Roakeldais started a wonderful project in which clothing was collected by primary schools for peers in Durban during the school days. The group was able to return with suitcases full of clothing and a check for their supporters in South Africa.
